How to register your images for copyright

Applications to register images, published or unpublished, claiming for themselves the Protections of Copyright please contact the Copyright Office (U.S. Copyright Office). The form used to record the pictures is the VA (Visual Arts).

To apply for registration of photographs, the author must submit the following in the same package or envelope, addressed to: Library of Congress Copyright Of-fice, 101 Independence Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20559-6000:

  • The application form completed and signed.
  • A non-refundable check or money order
  • A copy, not tobe returned, of the material to be registered.

Two or more unpublished images can be registered as a collection if:

  1. All elements of the collection are received in an orderly and organized manner,
  2. All the elements are identified under one general title, which represents the entire collection.
  3. The copyright author in all the elements that make up the collection and collection as a whole is the same, and
  4. All the elements were created by the same author, and if there are multiple authors, at least one of these authors has contributed to each and every one of the items in the collection.

The collections of photographs that have been published, can be recorded using the same form and making a single payment, provided that all photographs are owned by the same person claiming the Protections of Copyright.

The registration of a collection of photographs, extends protection to each of the elements of the collection.

On March 28, 2005 the Copyright Office amended its regulations to limit to 750 the number of pictures that can be identified on Form GR / PPh / CON is included with one application and one payment (70 FR 15587). This regulation does not limit the amount of pictures that can be included in a register of a group where the applicant chooses not to use Form GR / PPh / CON but identifies the publication date on each photograph, and the applicant meets the other requirements regulations for the registration of a group of published photographs.

The publication date of each photograph can be identified in a text file on the CD-ROM or DVD containing photographic images or in a list followed with huge tank and identifies the publication date for each image.
