How to choose a Lawyer
Tips for choosing a lawyer
Many lawyers who primarily serve individuals and families have experience in a wide range of legal services in frequent demand such as as divorce and family matters, wills and probate, bankruptcy and debt problems, real estate, crime and personal injury. Some have a specific expertise. Make sure the attorney you are considering has experience in the area you need.
Once you have selected a few candidates:
- Telephone each lawyer, describe your legal problem and make sure he or she can handle your situation
- Ask if you should pay for an initial consultation
- Ask for an estimate of what is usually charged for dealing with a case like yours
- Ask if the fees are for service hours or if your attorney would accept a contingency fee (i.e. a percentage of what you get at trial)
The initial consultation is an opportunity for you and the lawyer to known each other. After hearing the description of your case, the lawyer can give you a general idea of their rights and responsabilities as well as the alternatives of action. During the initial consultation the attorney can explain what you can do for you and how much it will cost. Do not hesitate to ask the attorney of his current and past experience in a case like yours. Nor hesitate to find out the fees and the likely monetary outcome. If you are planning to arrange an initial consultation and hiring the lawyer, request a payment agreement in writing.
